Stoltenberg in Ankara for the swearing in of Erdogan

The NATO secretary general will be in Ankara tomorrow Saturday for the swearing-in ceremony of Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who was re-elected on May 28 as president of Turkey, as the Alliance announced today.

Stoltenberg had announced yesterday Thursday his intention to go to Ankara soon in an effort to remove Turkey’s objections to Sweden joining NATO. During his visit, on Saturday and Sunday, he will have bilateral meetings with President Erdogan and high-ranking Turkish officials, according to the statement.

Earlier today there was a public confrontation via Twitter between the Foreign Ministers of Sweden and Turkey over the burning issue of the Alliance.

After the meeting of NATO foreign ministers, Tobias Billström tweeted about a “clear message to Turkey and Hungary” with Çavuşoğlu responding that what Sweden should be concerned about is fulfilling its commitments to Ankara.

The post of the Swedish Foreign Minister

“At the meeting of NATO foreign ministers today in Oslo there was strong support from member states for Sweden’s candidacy and a clear message to Turkey and Hungary to start ratifying Sweden’s NATO membership.”

Cavusoglu’s answer

“A clear message to our Swedish friends! Fulfill your commitments under the tripartite memorandum and take concrete steps in the fight against terrorism.”
