Sergio Pérez believes he could have taken third place in the Spanish Grand Prix despite illness – Sky Sports F1

Red Bull Racing driver Sergio Pérez thinks a third place could have been possible in the Spanish Grand Prix. The Mexican had to watch George Russell take the last cup, while the Briton was still behind Pérez on the starting grid. Pérez also indicates that he has not been feeling well all weekend, and hopes for improvement in Canada.

Pérez gives in conversation with Viaplay in Sky Sports F1 that it wasn’t easy for him. “I had to do damage control today. It was very difficult to follow my predecessors when we were on the same strategy, and it cost me dearly. If we wanted to achieve more, we would have had to take a risk like George (Russell, ed.) did, for example, but that would have been difficult.’ Once Pérez saw Russell driving in front of him, he was unable to close the gap.

Pérez still seems to keep the championship in mind: “Third place would have been possible if we had taken more risks, but we had to play it safe and win the points and limit the damage,” said Pérez, who a 53-point deficit in the championship will have to do more than just damage control to keep his dream alive.

Step back

Pérez has been facing a considerable backlog all weekend, he must admit. “We managed to limit the damage a bit. Overall I felt like we weren’t quite there this weekend. Hopefully that’s something we can fix for Canada,” he said, referring to the next Grand Prix in two weeks. “We operate in such a small framework that we have to be perfect to show good speed. This weekend we had to take a step back in everything. We have to do better, because I want to get the maximum number of points in Canada.’
