The post is like this
I met Madhusar when I went to Thiruvananthapuram recently. Madhusar sits in his old house in Kannammula looking cheerful despite age. Uma was there for a long time talking about the time he worked with him in the studio and old movie stories. Every day Madhusar watches movies and reads books. I fell asleep at two in the morning. The morning wake up is around eleven o’clock in the afternoon. No going out of the house or attending meetings and preaching. It may be that the mind and body do not get affected by old age because life dictates its own routine and follows it exactly.
This is not the reason for writing this post. Madhusar writes his own life story on Manorama’s ‘Sunday’ page. In a previous chapter, he had shared a memory of the time when he was studying acting at the School of Drama in Delhi. For those who have not read it, I am giving it below in Madhu sir’s words.
“Ifex Hall is a famous theater in Delhi. Almost all the best plays were staged here. We got information that Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru was coming to inaugurate a new play there. We reached the hall early that day. Wasn’t it a chance to meet Nehru up close? The Prime Minister arrived on the stage at the appointed time. The formal opening followed by a speech. It was over. The play was about to start. The Prime Minister urgently needed to reach another place. However, on the loving insistence of the organisers, he allowed himself to watch the play for a while. Of necessity, I took a seat at the front. Prime Minister Nehru was sitting almost in the middle.
The light in the hall went off. The drama has begun. Emotional scenes are unfolding in the arena. Suddenly when I look, a person crawls out on all fours in front of me in the darkness. Knowing that standing up between the audience and the stage would distract a large portion of the audience, the Prime Minister crept across the front of the arena without telling anyone. That walk really showed the purity of heart of that great man, that dear artistic leader and his respect for artists.
With my mind I bowed to the man’s modesty. Madhu sir ends the note by saying. This is a message to many people. I also bow my hands to Madhu sir for remembering this experience.
