Elon Musk has promoted a controversial documentary on Twitter after restricting its distribution by his own staff. Three top people leave, including Ella Irwin, head of trust and safety.
Three Twitter executives involved in moderation and protecting advertisers leave the company after an incident surrounding the documentary What is a woman by far-right opinion maker Matt Walsh. The documentary is considered by many to be anti-trans.
The conservative website The Daily Wire planned to promote the documentary on Twitter, but ran into the platform’s moderators in the process. They provided the film with a warning and limited its distribution.
This seems to be in line with Elon Musk’s “freedom of speech, not reach” approach: messages that are hateful but not illegal can remain, but their spread is limited.
But when he was approached about this by the co-CEO of The Daily WireMusk tweeted, “This was a mistake by several people at Twitter.” Musk tweeted that no ads would be shown next to the video.
On Friday, Musk himself tweeted a link to the video, commenting, “Every parent should watch this.” Musk himself is the parent of a trans daughter, Vivian Jenna Wilson. She broke all ties with Musk last year.
On the same day, Ella Irwin, head of trust and safety, left the company. Also two employees responsible for brand safety (ensuring ads are not shown with controversial content) either quit or were fired. Ella Irwin had only held her position since November, when her predecessor resigned following a clash with Musk.
Elon Musk named Linda Yaccarino as Twitter’s new CEO last month, but she has not yet taken office.
In a recent episode of his podcast, The Matt Walsh showWalsh said, “All diversity initiatives are anti-white initiatives.” He called diversity “an anti-white conspiracy.”
