WhatsApp Bug: Sending One Specific Link Can Crash App on Android Phones

WhatsApp is plagued by a curious bug. Just send someone a link „wa.me/settings“, and if the counterparty reads it in a thread in the phone application, it will immediately crash. In practice, this will result in the application constantly restarting in an infinite loop.

Strangely enough, this bug only affects Android phones, both the user and business versions of the app, including the latest version 2.23.10.77. And how to avoid this mistake? Fortunately, the crashes only occur when opening the discussion thread in which this link was used. So if you don’t want to be malicious and block someone’s WhatsApp, definitely don’t send this message to the world.

And if you’re already on the “damaged” side and can’t get your head around why WhatsApp keeps crashing when you open a thread with one particular user, this contact probably sent you the above link. How to defend yourself? Just open WhatsApp on the web or in the desktop app and delete the message with the link, as it won’t do any mischief on your computer. After restarting, the application will work on the phone without any problems. WhatsApp is working to fix this bug, and some users are already confirming that the link does not exit the app. For others, however, the problem is still present.
