Charlieu Hit by Hailstorm and Floods: Emergency Services Mobilized

If we immediately think of the major hailstorm that hit Le Coteau in June 2022, that of this Saturday June 3 in Charlieu seems not to have caused any damage to the roofs.

On the other hand, the streets of the city were transformed into real rivers, from 9:30 p.m., with no less than 10 to 20 cm in places. Countless small hailstones and waterspouts poured down, flooding some businesses and homes.

“The Loire had been placed on storm alert, but we did not expect such an episode. We will ask that the state of natural disaster be declared.”

Bruno Berthelier (Mayor of Charlieu)

The mayor of Charlieu, Bruno Berthelier, immediately went to the historic center and could only see the damage which also affected the municipal buildings. “This is an exceptional episode of which Charlieu is a victim. The Loire had been placed on storm alert, but we did not expect such an episode. We will ask that the state of natural disaster be declared”, announces Bruno Berthelier.

“There is a real solidarity. Many Charliendins have offered to help us and those who have been affected are rolling up their sleeves and have received us with great kindness.”

Emergency services strongly mobilized

Important means of help have been mobilized since the beginning of the evening. Firefighters from Charlieu, Pouilly-sous-Charlieu, Saint-Denis-de-Cabanne, Cuinzier and Roanne, in particular, intervened on around twenty sites to dry out the premises.

Whitewater lifeguards and a light boat are also requisitioned and positioned at the Charlieu barracks, in the event of the rescue of a person caught in the waters.

Firefighters remind that it is dangerous to walk in a street where the water level has risen and that it is also strongly advised not to cross a flooded road, even slightly, with a vehicle.
