Dengue Epidemic in Peru and the Region: Former Minister Oscar Ugarte Warns of Worsening Situation

The wave that we are experiencing from this dengue epidemic is the largest that has occurred in the history of the country”he mentioned.

“What we now have is a very large growth [del Aedes aegypti] caused by factors that are obvious, for example, the Cyclone Yaku that raised the temperature, caused rains, etc. It has been a factor in the growth of Aedes and, therefore, in the propagation of the dengue. The former owner of Ministry of Health (Minsa) reported that according to the latest figures from the Dengue Situation Room reveal that they have exceeded more than 121,000 cases of dengue throughout Peru.

“The first is the control vectorial, that is, identify where the mosquito is and eliminate it by cleaning the containers and fumigating. There, citizen participation is essential. What the vice minister has reported is that there are 30% of homes that do not allow access, so the Ministry of Health is limited in order to eliminate the mosquitoes that are the ones that transmit [el dengue]”he added.

“The second is the case treatment for that an early diagnosis is required. This diagnosis is made not only with analysis, but clinically. When epidemics are increasing, clinical diagnosis is fundamental, that is, fever, bone pain and detecting warning signs such as bleeding, intense abdominal pain, among others, which indicates that treatment should no longer be outpatient but rather you have to hospitalize”said.

Ugarte also affirmed that another of the measures will be the vaccination to contain the spread of this disease.

The third factor is that of the vaccine. As you will remember, there was talk of a vaccine recently approved by the FDA which is the Japanese Takeda vaccine.
