American student to be tried for arson after setting fire to Wyoming abortion clinic in May 2022

An American student, accused of having set fire in May 2022 to the site of a clinic performing abortions in the conservative state of Wyoming (west), will be tried for arson, a court decreed on Friday.

Lorna Roxanne Green, 22, has pleaded not guilty to the only charge for which she is the subject of the investigation into the fire, in May 2022, of this health center under construction in the city of Casper.

The clinic, whose opening was delayed for several weeks due to the fire, is the only one to offer surgical abortions in this conservative state, where the procedure remains legal despite attempts at restrictions led by elected Republicans.

Judged in July

According to the prosecution, the student threw gasoline on the spot after breaking a window. She, according to the local press, admitted to being at the origin of the fire, adding that she acted because of her opposition to abortion. The trial is expected to start on July 24, according to local newspaper Oil City News.

Since the U.S. Supreme Court struck down constitutional abortion protections in June 2022, many conservative states have put in place restrictions—even banning them—on the right to perform abortions. (IVG).
