Erdogan appointed former intelligence chief Hakan Fidan as foreign minister, and former chief of staff Yasar Guler as defense minister.

The Turkish President also appointed former Istanbul Governor Ali Yerli as Minister of Interior, former Deputy Prime Minister Mehmet Simsek as Minister of Finance and Treasury, and Alp Arslan Bayraktar as Minister of Energy and Natural Resources.

Simsek was highly appreciated by investors when he held the positions of Minister of Finance and Deputy Prime Minister between 2009 and 2018.

Reuters reported last week that Erdogan would almost certainly include Simsek in his new government, either as finance minister or vice president for economic affairs.

Simsek’s appointment may put an end to the unconventional economic policies that have been going on for years under Erdogan’s rule, which were characterized by lowering interest rates despite high inflation rates and the state’s control over the markets.

Erdogan was sworn in as president of his country, on Saturday, for a third term, after winning the run-off for the presidential elections last Sunday.

Erdogan said in a speech during his inauguration ceremony as president of the country: “We will strengthen our democracy with a new free, civil and inclusive constitution and liberate ourselves from the current constitution, which was the fruit of a military coup.”
