Japan will not use its growing military power against other countries. This was stated by Japanese Defense Minister Yasukazu Hamada on Saturday, Reuters reported.
At the same time, he reaffirmed his desire to prioritize diplomatic efforts and dialogue to “prevent misunderstandings.”
“We are not looking for rivalry or conflict,” Hamada told a security conference in Singapore with 600 delegates from 49 countries.
As a nation that primarily desires peace, Japan seeks to improve its deterrence capabilities and promote the resolution of differences through dialogue, the defense minister added.
Strengthening Japan’s defenses, including through longer-range missiles, aims to deter China from resorting to power in East Asia.
Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s government worries that Russia’s war in Ukraine could encourage China to attack neighboring Taiwan.
Japanese aggression before and during World War II is still a source of strain in relations with some countries, especially South Korea and China.
Japan has been beefing up its defense capabilities in recent years and in December unveiled its largest military build-up since the war.
