Rock am Ring Organizers Hope for Spontaneous Visitors as Ticket Sales Lag Behind Last Year

Nürburg/Nuremberg (dpa) – After initially fewer tickets were sold than in the previous year, the organizers of Rock am Ring are hoping for spontaneous visitors. “Of course we hope that in the short term some people will say: ‘Hey, with this good weather and the good line-up, let’s go to the Ring spontaneously,'” said Steffi Kim, Rock am Ring spokeswoman. “We can already see that in the numbers.” However, there will only be final figures for visitors after the festival.

The festival started on Friday afternoon with a performance by the band Flogging Molly. Alongside the Foo Fighters, Apache 207 and Kings of Leon, Die Toten Hosen and Rise Against will be performing at the weekend. Before the festival, the organizers had announced that around 70,000 revelers were expected at the Nürburgring over the weekend. That’s around 20,000 fewer than last year, when 90,000 people celebrated at Rock am Ring.

Together with Rock im Park in Nuremberg, it is one of the largest music events in Germany. The organizers are expecting around 60,000 revelers on the former Nazi Party Rally Grounds this weekend – fewer than last year. Even before the performances of the first bands, music fans got in the mood for the open-air spectacle on the campsites on Friday. Some had already spent a party-packed night there. Many visitors had already arrived on Thursday – with tents, handcarts and one or two crates of beer.
