Retired Yokozuna Kakuryu Oyakata Attends Haircut Ceremony, Looks to Future in Sumo

Kakuryu Oyakata, who was born in Mongolia, was promoted to yokozuna after the spring tournament in 2014 and won six championships.

Before the ceremony, Master Kakuryu played sumo wrestling with his 6-year-old eldest son as the final act.

Then, following Kirishima, the new Ozeki, who was teaching in the room, he performed the “Unryu-kata” dohyo entry just like when he was active in line with the fans’ shouts.

At the haircut ceremony that followed, about 380 people, including former yokozuna Hakuho Miyagino master and yokozuna Terunofuji, put scissors in, and when it was their father’s turn to speak out, the tears they had been holding back spilled.

Then, while receiving cheers from the fans saying “Thank you Kakuryu”, at the end, his master and former Ozeki Kirishima master Mutsu used scissors to cut off his thick shoulders, putting an end to his 20-year wrestling career.

Master Kakuryu recalled, “I feel like I’ve finally finished. I couldn’t help but cry when I heard the words of my father and other people.”

After that, he talked about his enthusiasm for the future, saying, “Thanks to sumo, I am who I am. I want to raise wrestlers who will carry the billboard in the future.”
