Massive Train Derailment and Collision in Eastern India Leaves 288 Dead and Hundreds Injured

At least 288 people are believed to have died in a massive train derailment and collision in the eastern Indian state of Odisha.

According to Indian media and foreign media, there was an accident in which three trains collided one after another near Bhubaneswar, the capital of Odisha, on the afternoon of the 2nd local time.

Amitabh Sharma, spokesman for the Ministry of Railways, said 10 to 12 cars of one of the trains derailed first and fell onto an adjacent track, causing another passenger train coming from the opposite side of the track to collide and derail.

The passenger train that collided hit even a freight train that was stopped on the railroad tracks.

“More than 288 people were killed in the accident involving three trains,” Odisha Fire Commissioner Sudanshu Sarang told AFP.

With hundreds still trapped inside the carriages and rescue and search operations ongoing, Indian authorities expect the death toll to rise further.

More than 900 people have been reported injured so far.

It was found that there were no Koreans among the casualties.
