“American football was always an incredibly important balance for me”

On Saturday, an American football league game will take place for the first time in Görlitz. The Görlitz Grizzlies will play against the Lauchhammer Miners, both quite young teams, from 3 p.m. in the Friendship Stadium. Sport has experienced a boom in East Germany in recent years, says Christian Piwarz. He is Saxony’s Minister of Education. Teachers and parents know him from various rounds of talks on the subject of teacher shortages. In the football scene, however, he is also known differently, as chairman of the American Football Association of Saxony. He has been passionate about the sport since the 1990s and still regularly comments on Dresden Monarchs games to this day. What fascinates him about American football, he says in an interview with the SZ.
