Javier Toquero after four years as a councilor in the Guadalajara city council with Vox, goes from second to leading the list of municipal ones.
Javier Toquero, Vox’s candidate for mayor of Guadalajara, studied as a child in Rufino Blanco, is married and is the father of two children. Although he’s well known around town, he winces when we ask him if he’s a lifelong GTV. “I don’t like it,” he admits. He affirms that the good results that are predicted for Vox do not put more pressure on it and he wants Guadalajara to remain a provincial city so that it does not lose its essence.
Question: After a legislature with a more discreet and less aggressive stance than your fellow bench member, you have made the leap to the front row. What has led you to make that decision?
Answer: I am discreet in every way and you don’t have to be a pushover in that regard. The issues must be treated with perspective and a certain equanimity. Whoever thinks it’s great and whoever can see it in another way, what are we going to do. It is normal that he was in the background because I was the vice spokesman. In these four years I have learned a lot and it is clear to me that the council has nothing to do with it from the inside and from the outside.
Q: But why did you take the step?
A: Apart from a few years that I have spent abroad, I have always been in Guadalajara. Here is my family and if Guadalajara has given me opportunities, it seems to me a way to return what it has offered me. That was my impetus. The ideal of Vox arose with certain things that affect us and that led me. Mine with Vox was a crush as is my eternal love for Guadalajara.
Q: You are a well-known person in Guadalajara. Is that positive for your candidacy?
A: I think so. And not because of my last name but because of the number of people who know me and I think they can’t speak ill of me. I have led a normal life and I have that peace of mind of being surrounded by very normal people, which is what I am and the people who make up the list.
Vox in Guadalajara wants to grow as far as the citizens want
Q: Very good results are predicted for Vox. Does that increase the pressure?
A: It doesn’t pressure me anymore. Vox in Guadalajara wants to grow as far as the citizens want. The truth is that every day the members of the list receive good vibes, wanting to bet on people from Guadalajara and without fault, let’s put it that way. It is what we want: to represent the citizens and even of diverse ideologies.
Q: Who will govern Guadalajara after the elections?
A: I think that the government pact is obligatory both in one block and in another. I do not believe that those who govern now can ensure that they will govern. The thing is to the limit in the two blocks.
Q: But are you open to deals?
A: We’ll see. We can understand each other with who is closest to our ideas, with the rest there is no chance.
On a personal level I get along with all the candidates on a political level, we’ll see
Q: At the national level, the PP is marking distances with Vox. How is the relationship with the PP and with its candidate?
A: The personal relationship with members and leaders is fantastic. But my personal relationship with the other candidates is also good. We’ll see the relationship at the political level.
Q: If you were to become mayor, what stamp would you like to leave on it?
A: I would like it not to lose the essence of a provincial city because it is very necessary. Our city is welcoming, you like it because it’s small, you get around well and almost everyone knows each other. It is our root and you cannot lose it.
Q: Is there a special project that you would like for the city
A: what I would like is that if we start doing something we finish it. I am also clear that the work has to be from the first day and not start doing works a few months before after four years in government.
