The accident happened in the eastern state of Odisha. According to the first reports, a passenger train derailed, after which it partially ended up on the opposite track. Those wagons were in turn hit by another passenger train, which subsequently also partially derailed.
It is not yet clear why the first train derailed. According to some sources, such as The Times of India, a third train, a freight train, was also said to have been involved in the accident.
