Former Head of Chinese CDC Acknowledges Possibility of COVID-19 Leak from Wuhan Lab

Jakarta

Amid predictions of a new wave of China’s COVID-19 reaching 65 million cases per week, the former top scientist there again spoke about the origin of the Corona virus regarding the existence of a lab in Wuhan.

Quoted from BBC Newsthe man who was the head of the Chinese Center for Disease Control (CDC), Prof. George Gao, said that the possibility of the virus ‘leaking’ from the laboratory cannot be ruled out.

“You can always suspect anything. It’s science. Don’t rule anything out,” he explained, quoted Saturday (3/6/2023).

Virologist Prof Gao is currently President of the China International Vaccine Innovation Institute after retiring from the CDC last year.

Prof Gao confirmed that the Chinese government is currently reviewing the possibility of the leak, although several times publicly denied the source of the virus transmission came from the Wuhan laboratory.

“The government is setting things up,” he said, but added that he was not involved in the tracing.

“Yes, the lab has been double-checked by experts in the field.”

This is the first acknowledgment from any of the former Chinese officials that a formal investigation was under way, but Prof Gao said he had yet to see results.

“I think their conclusion was that they followed all the protocols. They found nothing wrong [apa pun].”

It is almost certain that the virus that causes COVID-19 used to originate from bats.

How it got from bats to humans, however, is a much more controversial question. From the start there were two main possibilities.
