Samsung stands out in the smartphone market also for the photographic quality it offers, in the various ranges. The company has already acknowledged the problem and says it is preparing a solution.
If you have a Samsung Galaxy S23 and S23+, you may well be one of those with the bug that is affecting these models when capturing photos. Nicknamed banana-shaped or ring-shaped, in which it basically presents an area in the form of an arc or ring, completely out of focus, in images without depth. The following examples show the problem well and were shared by users in various forums such as Reddit or the Samsung community.
More specifically, users have noticed this permanently out-of-focus area in photos taken with the 50MP main camera.
Now, Samsung has acknowledged the problem in a publication on its website dedicated to the community, with the theme “Close-up blur on the S23“. In the text, Samsung says that the problem will be solved with an update, but it leaves tips so that users can minimize the effect now.
Samsung Announcement: Close-up Blur on S23
Here in the Community, we're pretty obsessed with the Galaxy S23's cameras. There's a 50MP main camera and a 12MP front camera, both of which are enhanced with Super HDR to help you take a truly epic photo. And Nightography's improved AI brings out details in low-light shots.
When you used the camera on your S23 or S23+, you might have noticed that when you took a close-up photo, the area around the object is slightly blurred. This is due to the wide-angle camera's large aperture on the back of the S23 and S23+, which helps you take pictures in the dark. But it also means that the sharper effect selective focus can make the background of your photos look a little blurry.
Samsung has plans to improve this aspect with a future software update. However, if you find yourself in this situation with your Galaxy S23 or S23+, you can try to solve it in the following ways:
- Try taking the photo from a little further away; if the object you are photographing is about 30 cm away, move a hand back
- Try taking the photo holding the phone vertically; if you are holding it horizontally or diagonally, the background can be blurred.
Have you noticed this blurring effect on your Samsung Galaxy S23?
