say the movie Untouchables left its mark on French minds would be an understatement. The film by Olivier Nakache and Éric Toledano, released in 2011, is still today the third biggest box office success in the history of French cinema with 19,490,688 admissions. Also, it is certainly with deep sadness that the two directors announced on their social networks, this Friday, June 2, the death of Philippe Pozzo di Borgo at the age of 72. The story of the businessman who became a quadriplegic greatly inspired that ofUntouchables and the character played by François Cluzet.

In 1993, Philippe Pozzo di Borgo was the victim of a paragliding accident which left him quadriplegic, that is to say paralyzed in all four limbs. Coming from a family of the Corsican nobility, he had made his fortune by inheriting the Champagne Pommery wine house. The death of his wife only three years after his accident gave him the will to write a book, The Second Wind, in which he recounts the dramas of his life and how he managed to overcome his handicap and his grief. In his memoirs, he returns in particular to the essential role played by his life assistant, Abdel Yasmin Sellou, who inspired the character of Driss played by Omar Sy in the film.
Since then, Philippe Pozzo di Borgo had found love again and even published three other books, before getting involved in several associations and debating publicly on euthanasia. In addition to becoming cult in France, the story ofUntouchables had also inspired foreign screenwriters, including an American remake, The Upsideworn by Bryan Cranston and Kevin Hart.
