5 Warning Signs of Peptic Ulcers: Symptoms and Treatment Options

JAKARTA (ANTARA) – A stomach ulcer is a condition in which an open sore, known as the duodenum, develops in the lining of the stomach or the first part of the small intestine.

Medical Daily in its report Thursday (1/6) explained that the stomach has an innate mechanism to protect itself from ulcers. Its lining produces mucus to protect against stomach acid and digestive enzymes.

However, heartburn can still develop due to a variety of factors, including prolonged use of NSAIDs (such as ibuprofen or aspirin) or H. pylori infection.

According to the health website Halodoc, stomach ulcers and peptic ulcers are difficult to distinguish because they both attack the lining of the stomach. However, heartburn is a general inflammation and peptic ulcer is a condition where the lining of the stomach is eroded. That is, peptic ulcers are more severe disorders than ulcer disease

Meanwhile, available treatments for peptic ulcers include drugs that effectively eliminate H. pylori bacteria, reduce acid production, enhance the healing process, and relieve associated symptoms. However, treating the symptoms before the condition worsens is certainly a good step.

Here are five warning signs that should be monitored closely for early diagnosis:

1. Pain in the upper abdomen
Peptic ulcers occur when the protective lining of the stomach or duodenum wears away, exposing sensitive tissues to the acidic digestive juices. This exposure causes inflammation, irritation, and a burning or gnawing pain in the upper abdomen, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

2. Frequent episodes of nausea
Nausea can occur in ulcer sufferers due to irritation of the stomach lining, increased stomach acid, digestive process disturbances, and nerve stimulation, according to Hopkins Medicine. One potential approach to managing recurring waves of nausea is through the use of home remedies, which offer effective solutions.

3. Heartburn after eating too much
Heartburn can occur after an ulcer due to increased stomach acid production and disruption of the protective barrier in the stomach lining, making it difficult to tell the two apart because of the similar burning sensation. Sometimes, the pain is so intense that it feels like “non-cardiac chest pain,” according to the American College of Gastroenterology.

4. Frequent bloating
Stomach ulcers can cause bloating due to the inflammation and irritation they cause in the stomach, leading to gas buildup and discomfort. One can find relief from this problem by avoiding triggers like spicy food and practicing the stress management technique, Ulcertalk.

5. Bleeding during defecation
Dr. Neil Sengupta, MD, a gastroenterology specialist at the University of Chicago, explains to Reader’s Digest that when blood is detected in the digestive tract along with upper abdominal pain, it sometimes indicates a peptic ulcer.
