Brescia, who only three years ago played in Serie A, have had a tough season, finishing 16th in Serie B, which meant the club needed to qualify for survival in the second division.
In the first qualifying final meeting with Cosenza away from home, there was a 1-0 loss, and on Thursday evening the second meeting was played at the Stadio Mario Rigamonti. The match was then forced to be abandoned – after a late equalizer by Cosenza in the 95th minute to make it 1-1.
After the equalizing goal, supporters threw several Bengals onto the pitch, and also stormed the pitch, causing chaos to break out. Outside the arena, rockets were also fired at the away stands. The plan was initially to play the last 90 seconds of the match, but it was ultimately deemed not possible and thus Brescia were relegated.
After 38 years in Serie A and in Serie B, Brescia is now forced to play in the third division next season.
