By Mohamed K. – Charged by the President of the Republic, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, went to the UN headquarters in New York on Tuesday for a working visit which comes as a prelude to the elections for the renewal of non-permanent members. of the Security Council on June 6. By this trip, the successor of Ramtane Lamamra increases the tempo, by multiplying bilateral meetings and handshakes in order to boost the Algerian candidacy, with the aim of obtaining this seat on the Security Council. This mission is also explained by the stakes of this election for which Algeria is a stakeholder, especially since the Minister of Foreign Affairs will have a busy agenda with senior UN officials including the Secretary General, Antonio Guterres.
One of the great challenges for the head of Algerian diplomacy is also to cast a wide net among the members of the General Assembly of the international body to benefit from broad support for Algeria’s candidacy, even if it is now strong. the plebiscite and approval of the African Union, the League of Arab States and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, as well as the support of several brotherly and friendly countries.
The analyzes show that Algeria’s candidacy for this post falls within the framework of its commitment to contribute, as an influential actor, to the management of international challenges. A commitment that it intends to carry out “by putting forward ideas and initiatives likely to strengthen multilateral action in the maintenance of international peace and security, as well as to relaunch international cooperation and provide it with the necessary means to respond to the needs and aspirations of all humanity”.
In the wake of its diplomatic efforts at the regional and international levels, in particular its efforts to restore peace, security and stability in regions and countries in crisis and in conflict, Algeria has deployed its diplomatic experience and expertise in mediation for conflict resolution. An experience which pleads in favor of its presence at the top of this international body, even if it is only for two years during which it will have to make heard the voice of peace, of marginalized countries, of Africa, and to try to have the UN repair errors, omissions and unjustified exclusions, in particular the ostracism of which the African continent is the victim of major world decisions – countries in these parts of the world often excluded from UN processes but attentive to the rebalancing of forces in a world where all States will find a place.
Ahmed Attaf, who delivered a speech on Tuesday evening from New York at a reception organized at the UN headquarters as part of activities aimed at promoting the Algerian candidacy, affirmed that Algeria would continue to to contribute as a “responsible and reliable” partner in the face of global challenges, by submitting ideas and initiatives capable of strengthening the role of multilateralism in the preservation of international peace and security.
To this end, the Minister reiterated Algeria’s “strong and resolute commitment” to assume this responsibility “with a deep sense of modesty, self-sacrifice and seriousness”, and that it “will contribute as a partner responsible and reliable in facing global challenges, through the proposal of ideas and initiatives likely to strengthen the role of multilateralism in the preservation of international peace and security”.
Referring to the challenges currently weighing on the United Nations, Attaf underlined that “they are now accentuated and more rigorous than they were in the past”, specifying that “despite all the gaps in the work of this organization because of the absence of the political will necessary to honor promises that have lasted too long, the peoples of the planet remain attached to this organization as a beacon of hope and an eternal depository of the legitimate aspirations of humanity. .
All of these developments have contributed to “forging the identity of Algeria’s foreign policy and strengthening its unwavering commitment to the accomplishment of its missions in the achievement of the objectives stipulated in the UN Charter in addition to the determined contribution to global efforts to ensure a better future for humanity”.
As an extension of its record, Algeria is continuing its contributions to promote peace and stability in its regional environment, in close coordination with the United Nations and the regional organizations concerned, in particular the African Union and the League of Arabs.
Information from New York shows that the Algerian candidacy is supported by many countries and regional organizations, as Algeria, which is designated to occupy this seat, will continue to make its contribution as a responsible and reliable partner in the face of the challenges world, by claiming this voice and this word for the countries of the South.
