The company boasted an interesting concept Asus. She showed the graphics card GeForce RTX 4070, which not only does not have a 12VHPWR power connector, it does not even have a classic 8-pin. You won’t find an external power supply here at all, as the card solves its power supply only through slots. But the question is, how can a 200W card be powered through the slot, when PCIe does not supply that much. The joke is that it doesn’t just feed through this one slot, but through multiple different slots. The card uses two. In addition to the classic PCIe, another connector, labeled GC_HPWR, takes care of the power supply.
It was presented on a special version of the Asus Z790 TUF Gaming motherboard, which had the GC_HPWR power slot behind the PCIe x16 slot. That way, the motherboard would take care of all the power. This connector should be able to deliver 600W, so the RTX 4070 should be able to handle it with total control. The advantage would be a seemingly smaller amount of cabling and the elimination of the risk of incorrectly inserting the cable with the 12VHPWR terminal. But it’s not that simple. That energy is not taken in the motherboard just like that. Asus basically moved the connectors from the graphics to the motherboard, so there are three 8-pin connectors and the much-hated 12VHPWR. The new connector is just a kind of power adapter that has been moved to the motherboard. The graphics itself has three fans and a dual BIOS with settings for Performance or Quiet. For now, it bears the designation Megalodon.
It’s still a concept, and for it to work, not only the graphics card would have to support it, but also the motherboard (must have that extra slot). Asus should have made it known that the new product should go into production this year and be available worldwide, however, it does not solve anything so fundamental in itself (perhaps only the fact that the RTX 4070 can be powered by 8-pin connectors via the motherboard and does not have to use 12VHPWR , although it can) and adds a little extra complication (while you can use the motherboard with other graphics cards with traditional power supply, on the other hand, a graphics card without other power connectors cannot do without this special motherboard).
