Remarkably enough, European champions Shanice van de Sanden and Kika van Es have been included in the pre-selection for next summer’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. National coach Andries Jonker announced this on Thursday.
Van de Sanden and Van Es were passed last year for the European Championship in England. Back then Mark Parsons was still the national coach. His successor Jonker has room for the two veterans in his thirty-man preselection.
The call for Van de Sanden and Van Es is a surprise. Right winger Van de Sanden played her last and 95th international match a year and a half ago. Van Es was called up in November last year, but then went through a tough period.
Van Es got pregnant, but had a miscarriage in March, she told it more than a week ago AD. The 31-year-old left back made her comeback at her club PSV at the end of last month and secretly hoped for a place in the World Cup selection. That has been successful for the time being for the European champion of 2017.
Furthermore, there are no surprises in the pre-selection of Orange. Seventeen-year-old Wieke Kaptein also belongs to Jonker’s team. The FC Twente midfielder, who made her international debut in April, can become the youngest Dutch player ever to play at a World Cup. Star player Vivianne Miedema is missing due to a serious knee injury.

Orange classified in ‘group of death’
The World Cup will be held from July 20 to August 20. The Netherlands will meet Portugal, Vietnam and reigning world champions the United States in the group stage. All matches in this ‘group of death’ are played in New Zealand. For the losing World Cup finalist from four years ago, the tournament starts on July 23 with a match against Portugal.
The Orange squad will start preparing for the World Cup in Zeist on June 19, although that is still surrounded by question marks due to a quarrel with European top clubs. This is followed by a training camp in Horst in Limburg (June 27-July 4) and a farewell match in Kerkrade against Belgium (July 2). On July 7, the internationals board a plane to Sydney, where a nine-day training camp awaits.
The final World Cup selection with 23 names will be announced on June 30. The Netherlands will take an extra keeper and field player to the other side of the world in case players get injured.
Teams may only substitute players with serious injuries for the first World Cup match. If there are no substitutions, the two extra players can no longer be used. The Netherlands will send those two players home after the first match against Portugal.
