A beautiful but somewhat dated cinema called The Empire is located in an English coastal village. The story takes place in the early 1980s and for the employees the cinema is both family and home. Hilary (Olivia Colman) returns to the Empire after a long absence, but the once bright employee is now absent-minded and far more introspective than before. She does her job routinely and quietly endures harassment and abuse from her boss (Colin Firth). When charismatic young Stephen (Michael Ward) begins his career in the Empire, the two quickly find a bond with one another. This is the turning point the two misfits have been waiting for.
