PARIS – Swedish tennis player Mikael Ymer was fined 37,370 euros for smashing his racket against the referee’s chair at the ATP tournament in Lyon.
In the second round against the Frenchman Arthur Fils, at 5:6 in the first set, he was upset that the referee did not check the mark of the ball. It was reported by the AP agency.
Ymer was subsequently disqualified and Fils became the winner of the match. An ATP Tour spokesman said Ymer lost 9,980 euros in prize money and the 20 points he earned for advancing to the second round. He also added that the fines committee will conduct a review of what happened to determine whether further penalties are warranted. Ymer was also fined on the spot in the amount of 27,490 euros.
The Swede lost in the first round of Roland Garros to the 17th-seeded Italian Lorenzo Musetti 5:7, 2:6, 4:6. “With all due respect, I think it’s pretty clear from the video what caused it and why I reacted the way I did. Of course, I’m not excusing it at all.” stated Ymer at the press conference.
