British company Savannah Resources has received approval from the Portuguese environmental agency APA to mine lithium at the Barosso mine near Boticas, in northern Portugal.
A year ago, the Portuguese government launched an international tender to search for lithium in six regions in the country, but was met with protest from environmental groups. The Barroso mine, for example, would be located in a rural region where, among other things, the Iberian wolf and other endangered species live.
The APA issued a “favorable statement of environmental impact” for the mine, but attached some conditions. Savannah must take steps to protect local wildlife and share the project’s profits with shareholders. The British company promises that it will adhere to those conditions.
