ABU DHABI, 31st May, 2020 (WAM) — Eng. Nasser Al-Bahri, Chairman of the Organizing Committee for the Electric Vehicles Exhibition and Conference in Abu Dhabi, said that the electric vehicle market in the UAE is witnessing rapid growth as a result of the country’s efforts to provide advanced infrastructure and electric charging stations and encourage the shift towards sustainable transportation.

Al-Bahri added, in statements to the Emirates News Agency, WAM, that the electric vehicle market in the UAE is expected to record an annual growth of 27.2% during the period from 2023 to 2027, to reach 15,000 vehicles by 2027.

Al-Bahri indicated that the UAE has ambitious plans and qualitative initiatives to encourage members of society to switch to electric vehicles, which has been strengthened by providing advanced infrastructure in accordance with international best practices to accommodate the increase in the number of electric vehicles.

He stated that the UAE is interested in developing a sustainable transportation sector, especially since this sector is one of the fastest growing sources of carbon emissions in the world, indicating that electric vehicles play a pivotal role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions in line with the UAE’s commitment to investing in sustainable solutions and in line with Its strategic initiative for climate neutrality 2050, and its willingness to host world leaders at the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 28).

He pointed out that the Electric Vehicle Exhibition and Conference, in its second edition, succeeded in attracting global interest in the Middle East and North Africa region, which constitutes a large and promising market awaiting great growth and commercial opportunities in the coming years, in addition to shedding light on the requirements and developments of the transition towards sustainable electric transport in the Middle East.

The Chairman of the Organizing Committee for the Abu Dhabi Electric Vehicles Exhibition and Conference pointed out that the exhibition brought together those concerned with the sectors of the vehicle industry, batteries and electric charging, to discuss the infrastructure and legislation regulating the sector through the participation of international speakers in the conference and presenting the latest technology in this field.

He explained that the number of countries participating in this year’s edition of the exhibition reached 30 countries, amid wide participation of regional and international companies to present their latest innovations in the field of electric vehicles, in addition to attracting many participations of national companies, which are witnessing a remarkable increase, whether in the field of manufacturing or providing services in the transport sector. The number of electric and hybrid cars in the UAE is increasing rapidly, which is more evident in the taxi fleets that are now running on the roads of most of the emirates, at a time when the country is witnessing a rise in the acquisition of personal electric vehicles in recent years.

The UAE is leading the change towards the future of electric cars in the region, as it has succeeded since 2021 in converting more than 20% of the car fleets of government agencies to electric vehicles.
