Formerly Bankrupt Kosmos Cinema to Reopen as Frame in Zurich Film Festival Takeover

The cinema, which has gone bankrupt, is scheduled to reopen in September. The Zurich Film Festival will take over the programming. For the time being there are no tenants for the other Kosmos parts.

From 1 June, SBB will rent the six cinema halls and the entrance area in the former Kosmos to Spoundation Motion Picture AG, which markets the Zurich Film Festival (ZFF). On their behalf, the ZFF will run the cinema on Europaallee under the new name Frame.

Multiple tenants instead of just one

The former cosmos “should again become a place of encounter, exchange and culture,” said Alexis Leuthold, who is responsible for management at SBB Immobilien, at a media conference on Zurich’s Europaallee on Wednesday.

The cosmos was actually a hodgepodge of offerings; on almost 5000 square meters there was an event forum with a stage, a large bistro, six cinemas and auditoriums, a bar with a club and a bookshop with a shop and café.

Originally, the SBB intended to rent the entire building to a single party. However, the offers received showed that too few synergies could be used, said Leuthold.

With the ZFF, they have now found an ideal partner for the cinema area, the anchor point of the house. In the coming weeks, SBB – in consultation with the ZFF – was looking for a suitable tenant for the catering area. The areas on the first floor are to be separated and also advertised separately.

Festival believes in the location

The Europaallee is not an unknown venue for the ZFF. It has shown films at Kosmos in recent years. It has been shown that the location is very popular, especially with the young audience, said festival director Christian Jungs. In 2021, more tickets were sold here than in the large Corso cinema.

The cinema is now to be repaired after its forced break of six months so that it can start again on September 28 as part of the Zurich Film Festival. After that, it will start normal annual operations on October 9th.

The profile of the frame should correspond to that of the ZFF, as Jungs said. “Intelligent mainstream like James Bond and Avatar, art house films as well as essayistic and documentary films in their original version with subtitles” would be shown.

The Kulturhaus Kosmos was founded in 2017. There were always quarrels around the company. In May 2022, the entire Board of Directors at that time resigned. The committee formed afterwards attempted an immediate, tough restructuring – but the business concept of the house was insufficient, it was said in December when the culture house closed its doors from one day to the next and went bankrupt (reported persoenlich.com).
