Rnothing went as planned. An attempt to intimidate to recover a debt resulted in the death of a man who earned François Arenas, 24, to appear before the Gironde Assize Court. He is on trial until Friday, June 2 for intentional violence resulting in death without intention to give it, as part of an ambush.

The facts date from January 6, 2018, shortly after midnight. Sent to recover money following the sale of narcotics, François Arenas and Justin Grouselle burst in, hooded, gloved and dressed in dark, at 54, rue Lamartine in Ambarès-et-Lagrave. Molesting the mistress of the place to enter, the two accomplices, armed with a tear gas canister and a revolver, intended to fulfill their mission quickly.

Grande confusion

But the occupants of the house did not let themselves go and defended themselves against this nocturnal intrusion. Tear gas canister emptied, making the narrow corridor unbreathable and visibility almost zero in the dark, cries, grabs, punches and gunshots: the greatest confusion would then have reigned.

The balance sheet is heavy. The tenant of the pavilion and her two sons as well as the friend of one of them who came to play the console were injured, two of whom were shot. And Justin Grouselle did not get up. Unconscious when help arrived, hit by a bullet in the head, he died during the day at the hospital where he had been rushed to.

The gendarmes’ investigation showed that the fatal shooting was attributable to François Arenas. He would have fired blindly to regain control of the situation. To scare and cover his escape. And he would have reached his sidekick by mistake. First indicted for murder, he benefited from a requalification of the facts because justice admits that he had no intention of killing his friend who was fighting.

“He has a lot of guilt in him,” knows the mother of her son. “He has to live with that. For him, it’s already the double penalty “

Defended by M.e Alexandre Novion, François Arenas appears free after two years of pre-trial detention. High shoes and a white polo shirt, black pants, he keeps his head down and barely talks about himself. “I can’t get things out. “Coming from the community of travelers, he was not, unlike his little sister and his little brother, recognized by his father, absent even before the Assize Court.

” I feel guilty “

“My mother has always taken good care of us. This is why he did not understand when she left overnight in September 2017. His partner describes a young person who was easily influenced. “He was very bad, really more like before. His mother was everything to him, a pillar. He felt alone, abandoned, betrayed. »

Justin Grouselle was the defendant’s best friend. They were called “Pepito” and “Paco”. They were like brothers. “He even knew me better than my family, he was always very present, he knew what I was going through. His voice breaks. He failed to write to the victim’s family. “I’m not lying to you, I find it hard to talk about this. I feel guilty. »
