Hamburg – The motto at Hamburger SV for the relegation to the Bundesliga is: “Now more than ever!” At least that was the case Tim Walter two days before the first leg against the VfB Stuttgart (Thursday, 8.45 p.m.) in the press conference. The 47-year-old looked much more determined than ever and is keen to claim promotion in his second season as head coach of the second division club. It was the goal from the beginning and now it should finally work out in two games. The Swabians are already the favorites, so he had to talk around it.

“We have so much to offer”

“We’ve scored 70 goals, 66 points and won 20 games in 34 games this season, more than any other team. What has been achieved is very positive and means the best HSV record in this league. Stuttgart, on the other hand, is 16th in the table. in the relegation, which they could have avoided on their own on the last day of the game, which they did not manage to do. Nevertheless, VfB are the favorites as the first division team, but we too have so much to offer that we can win and ultimately get promoted.”

Record participant Hamburg

For HSV it is the second relegation in a row and the fourth overall (twice as a first division club), making it a record participant in modern times (since 2009). Twice they were the winners, once (last year against Hertha BSC) as a loser. Now comes number four.

“Playing on your strengths in possession”

Walter says about the first meeting with his former club (20 games for VfB from summer to winter 2019): “The game in Stuttgart is the first half of this duel. It’s only settled at the end, but of course we’re going to Stuttgart to win there. We want to play to our strengths in possession, be very active and keep our opponents busy so they can’t play to their strengths. If we can do that, it won’t be easy to play against us. The Stuttgarters will not have been happy when they heard that it was against HSV. But I’m looking forward to this duel, because VfB and HSV are great clubs and the games will be exciting.”

Walter with a positive record against VfB

The native of Baden-Württemberg only played against Stuttgart with his youth teams – he won four times, there was a draw once and he lost three times. He definitely doesn’t want that because, unlike last year, he and the HSV sports director had been aiming for promotion the whole time this season. If it didn’t work out in a bitter way last Sunday, it should work now with a good portion of motivation against the Swabians.

Away tickets gone quickly

At least 4,500 HSV fans will be there in the former Neckarstadion and the tickets were sold out within a few minutes. The arena is being rebuilt for the European Championships next year and currently only holds 47,400 spectators. The motto for the first and second leg is: all in blue.
