Salzburg Festival Honors Deceased Actor Peter Simonischek as Legendary “Jedermann” Performer

Salzburg (dpa) – The Salzburg Festival has honored the deceased actor Peter Simonischek as one of the most popular “Jedermann” actors of the festival. “One of the really great actors has left us,” said director Markus Hinterhäuser on Tuesday. “Peter Simonischek was blessed with an abundance of quality, he was what you would call a crowd favorite in the best sense of the word – and rightly so.” Simonischek died on the night of May 30 in Vienna at the age of 76.

The Austrian artist performed the title role in Hugo von Hofmannsthal’s “Jedermann” about 100 times in Salzburg from 2002 to 2009 – more often than any other actor before or after him.

The “play of the rich man’s death” is performed every year at the festival in the center of Salzburg.

“With his unique stage presence, he filled the impressive dimensions of the cathedral square with ease, with every cell of his body he was ‘everyone’,” said Hinterhäuser. Simonischek was an “incomparable everyone”.
