“How Newcastle United Plans to Strengthen Squad for Champions League Qualification”

Newcastle upon Tyne

Newcastle United will appear in four competitions next season. Like it or not, The Magpies will spend a lot to strengthen their squad.

Newcastle below Eddie Howe this season has been outstanding by finishing in the top four and qualifying for the Champions League. This is the first time that Newcastle have qualified for the event after the last in 2003.

Qualification for the Champions League is certainly welcomed by clubs and supporters who have long been waiting for the opportunity to appear again in European competition. However, Newcastle certainly doesn’t want to just hitch a ride in the Champions League and become the butt of a more experienced team.

Considering that the Champions League promises large amounts of prize money, Newcastle certainly doesn’t want to pass by. One way is to strengthen the squad by bringing in quality players.

Manager Eddie Howe is aware that the quality and quantity of his current players are still far from perfect. With next season playing in four competitions, the depth of the squad must be maintained.

Therefore, Howe wants management to clean up this summer while keeping the balance sheet in check so as not to violate Financial Fair Play.

“Yes, we talked about that last Saturday (transfer). I don’t feel there is a discussion about the budget because there are many determining factors, but obviously we know what to do,” Howe said in Belfast Telegraph.

“When you are in my position, the task at hand will be very difficult. It is difficult because we will appear in many competitions next season, so you need squad depth. I think our squad is thin this season, especially in some sectors. We are only four midfielders in half both seasons,” Howe continued.

“You’re going to struggle when one of them is injured, so the sense to think about adding depth to the squad.”

The thin squad depth meant that Newcastle almost failed to finish in the top four as their performance declined in the second half of the season. After winning eight out of 10 matches during March-April, Newcastle have only won once in their last five matches.

“We’re not that bad yet, you could see that against Chelsea, but it’s true that we’re struggling with injuries. That’s definitely our focus to strengthen the squad. We can’t just worry about 1-2 injured players and put us in a difficult position. “
