Designer Defends Jennifer Hudson Over Thrift Store Gift Bag Controversy

She’s in the “Spotlight” for all the wrong reasons.

Rising designer Sonic Saturday is defending Jennifer Hudson after the singer apparently donated her gift bag to a thrift store.

TikTok user CrystelleC shared a video finding a bag that cheekily reads “You Fake Like This Birkin” at a thrift store last week.

“I’m thrifty and I found this purse here…look what I found in the back of this purse,” she said before showing Sonique’s business card and a letter of thanks addressed to Hudson.

“What an honor to offer you one of my handbags. You inspired me as much as all black girls,” the note read.

However, Sonique told TMZ she doesn’t mind the gift, as the bag is from 2014 and Hudson’s team paid for it.

Saturday – who counts Tracee Ellis Ross and Kylie Jenner’s former best friend Jordyn Woods among her fans – added that she wasn’t sure Jennifer “even got the bag”, telling her followers, “don’t don’t attack her, we want to be friends with her. ”

The designer, who is famous for his bold statements on bags, instead wants to use this social media moment to “leverage more black-owned businesses and women-owned businesses.”

But in TikTok’s comments section, one person called Hudson “cold for giving it away with the card,” while another joked, “Didn’t think that was going to say Carrie Bradshaw,” referencing to the neon Louis Vuitton handbag that Hudson’s character was given by Sarah Jessica Parker’s Bradshaw in the movie “Sex and the City.”

On Twitter, people were angry about the big bag debate. An account interrogates, “..why would Jennifer Hudson wear this bag? Shit, I wouldn’t wear that damn bag.

Another agreed: “and why exactly would jennifer hudson want a fake birkin bag?”

For those willing to shell out for a faux Birkin, Saturday has a ton available for purchase on its website in a range of colors and sizes for $230 to $550 – a fraction of what it would cost to the real deal.

It remains to be seen if Hudson will pick up a new one herself.
