Italian Players Make Waves on Second Day of Roland Garros Competition

Second day today, Monday 29 May, of competitions at Roland Garros. You are the Italian players on the pitch, after Lorenzo Musetti, Lorenzo Sonego and Matteo Arnaldi made their debut yesterday. Unlucky draw for Flavio Cobolli, who will face Carlos Alcaraz (his 3rd match on the Lenglen where the matches will start at 11am as usual) on French clay, who returned to the top of the ATP ranking last Monday.

Jannik Sinner, number 8 in the world, makes his debut against the French Alexandre Muller (not before 8.15 pm on the Chatrier), while Marco Cecchinato will take the field (his will be the fourth match that will be played on court 14 where the matches will start as always at 11 am) against the 18-year-old Italian-French Luca Van Assche. His mother is Italian and his father Belgian, but he chose to play for France, having lived for the first few years in Aix-En-Provence and then above all thanks to an instructor in Lyon, who convinced him to choose to play under the French nationality.

Big surprise from Fabio Fognini, engaged against the Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime (n. 10 Atp and seeding) – who withdrew from the Atp in Lyon a few days ago due to shoulder pain just to be ready for Roland Garros -: the Ligurian won in three sets (6-4 , 6-4, 6-3). Fognini himself admitted: «Today, after the second set, I saw that Auger-Aliassime couldn’t move well». His was the second match against Mathieu.

Not just the blues. The big names also make their debut. We have already mentioned Carlos Alcaraz, but today Novak Djokovic is also playing, who is hunting for the 23rd Slam to detach Rafa Nadal – the great absentee (he won 14 editions of the French Slam) – in the all-time rankings. The Serbian faces the American Aleksandar Kovacevic.

As for the women’s draw, today there are two Italians on the field: Martina Trevisan (against the Ukrainian Elina Svitolina, hers will be the 3rd match on the Mathieu where the matches will start as usual at 11 am) and Elisabetta Cocciaretto (her match against the Czech Petra Kvitova will be the fourth on the Lenglen where the matches will start as usual at 11 am).
