From year to year, Disney makes remakes of their popular cartoons. This year, audiences in cinemas will enjoy the story of Ariel the Little Mermaid.
“AiF” has prepared bright differences between the film and the cartoon. And also compared the plot twists with the original fairy tale, which was presented to the world by the writer Hans Christian Andersen.
Appearance. In the original story, Andersen described the Little Mermaid like this: “…delicate and transparent, like a rose petal, with deep, blue eyes like the sea.” The main character didn’t have a name. Just a little mermaid.
Appearance. The biggest controversy on the Internet was the difference in the appearance of the little mermaid in the movie from the cartoon. So, Disney approved the dark-skinned actress Halle Bailey for the role of the white-skinned and red-haired Ariel from the cartoon. “Hally has a unique combination of soulfulness, youth, innocence and depth, plus excellent vocal abilities,” film director Rob Marshall justified the choice of the actress.
Family. In the original story, the Little Mermaid has a father, a grandmother, and five sisters. In the cartoon – a father and six sisters, whose names begin with the letter “A”. These same family members are repeated in the film. But the filmmakers changed the traditions of the underwater family. In the new story, the names of the sisters are different: Indira, Mala, Karina, Caspian, Tamika and Perla.
Motive. In the fairy tale, the Little Mermaid’s grandmother says that even though mermaids live longer than people, people have a soul. And Andersen’s main motivation is to get an immortal human soul. And only then – to find love. And in the cartoon and the film, the main motive is the love of the prince.
Ariel’s friends. Flounder fish, Sebastian crab and Scuttle seagull in the remake seemed to users “too realistic and frightening.” By the way, in the original fairy tale, Ariel had no fish, no crab, no seagulls.
Legs. When Andersen’s Little Mermaid got legs, she not only lost her voice. Each step caused her unbearable pain – it was the price for being a man. And the little mermaids in the Disney edition just got what they wanted and did not experience any discomfort when walking.
The villain. In the book, the witch only helps the Little Mermaid become human. But in the cartoon and the film, Ursula interferes in the life of the heroine, even when Ariel lives in the royal palace.
Ending. While Ariel and Prince Eric in the cartoon and the movie live happily ever after, and Triton blesses the marriage of his daughter and the prince, the story of the book mermaid ends tragically…
Andersen’s mermaid tries to make the prince fall in love with her. But the lover admits that although he cares about her, it’s more like caring for a child than a wife. The prince meets a princess from another kingdom and is convinced that she was the one who saved him from the storm. So he gives his heart to her. The little mermaid tried to save her sisters from death. They sold their hair to a sea witch in exchange for a chance to give the Little Mermaid back her marine life. All she has to do is kill the prince with a charmed knife. However, the Little Mermaid disagrees. She throws herself into the sea and dies.
