Police in Venice have launched an investigation into the Grand Canal. The water in the most famous canal of the Italian city turned bright green on Sunday morning. The cause is not yet known.
Governor Luca Zaia of the Veneto region posted a Photo of the green liquid that spread through the water. The photo was taken near the Rialto Bridge.
The green spot in the water was reported by residents. The regional environmental protection agency took samples of the water. Police officers have been convened urgently and are looking at what measures can be taken.
The incident came shortly after environmental groups in Italy recently painted several monuments in protest. They also caused the water from the Trevi Fountain in Rome to turn black. The activists did that with charcoal. That action was in protest against fossil fuels.
So far no one has claimed the green coloring of the water in Venice.
