The results of the Monaco Grand Prix were not what Ferrari racers had hoped for. Charles Leclerc finished in the same position from which he started – sixth. Carlos Sainz fought Esteban Ocon for third place in the race, but due to an unsuccessful strategy, he could not get ahead of him due to a pit stop, and closer to the finish he made a mistake on a wet track and finished eighth.
Charles Leclerc (6th): “Why did we go to the pits late to get intermediate tires? I think this is the most common question I will be asked today. We have made strategic miscalculations in the past, but I don’t think we have made a mistake today.
In such conditions, there was a high probability of a safety car entering the track, given that many were riding slicks in the rain. That is why we stayed on the track to the last in the hope of a safety car, but he never left. Now we understand that it was better to stop earlier. But if someone made a mistake, our solution would work.
Our car is very difficult to manage in traffic. The pace is better than we showed today, but I don’t think I could have done better.
In Barcelona we will have some new products and I hope they will take a step in the right direction. Of course, we do not expect miracles, but I hope that the updates will be enough to at least have a good qualification.
Carlos Sainz (8th): “As usual in Monaco, adrenaline was overflowing – you could hear it on the radio. The first pit stop surprised me, because I was very fast on the Hard tires and thought that I could extend the distance and overtake Esteban due to this. However, we made a pit stop, after which I returned to the track in a second behind. I was not ready to accept this, so I’ll talk to the team.
As for the second pit stop, we spent it a lap later, but this is probably more my mistake. I tried to cope with the disappointment of the first pit stop and tried to do something, but I was wrong.
Clash with Esteban? He braked in the middle of the track, and I had no room left or right. I’m glad that nothing serious happened, but it shows that there is no room for two cars on this track – it is too narrow for modern technology.
