Netflix recently expanded the ban on sharing passwords in more countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom. This controversial policy immediately made Netflix ridiculed by one of its competitors, Amazon Prime Video.
Netflix emphasizes that users can only share accounts with family or other people who live under one roof. If you want to share an account with people who don’t live in the same house, users must pay an additional fee of USD 7.99 or around IDR 119 thousand per month.
Responding to this rule, the UK’s Amazon Prime Video Twitter account immediately moved quickly to insinuate Netflix. They uploaded a screenshot of the profile opt-in page asking “Who’s watching?” with six profile icons below.
Underneath the icons are the profile names ‘Everyone’, ‘Who’, ‘Has’, ‘Our’ Password’ or which translates to whoever has our password, followed by a heart emoji. /5/2023).
Not only that, Prime Video also quoted a Netflix tweet from 2017 that ironically said, “Love is sharing a password,” or “Love is sharing passwords.”
When Netflix posted the tweet six years ago, the streaming giant made it free for users to share passwords with anyone, regardless of whether that person lived in the same house or not.
it Netflix facing stiffer competition from other streaming platforms and to boost their revenue they are testing several methods, one of which is prohibiting users from sharing accounts and passwords.
The rule was first trialled in several countries in South America, before being brought to Canada, New Zealand, Portugal and Spain earlier this year. Currently these rules are extended to more countries, such as the US, UK, Brazil, Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, Taiwan, France, Germany, and others.
