Old Trafford Cricket Ground witnessed one of the best deliveries in the history of cricket. This brilliant bowling performance was born in the Lancashire-Nottinghamshire match in the Vitality T20 Blast.
Lancashire’s left-arm pacer Luke Wood bowled a historic yorker. Wood brought out one of the biggest weapons in his quiver to return Nottinghamshire opener Alex Hales.
Wood returned Hales on the third ball of the first over of the Nottinghamshire innings. Wood dismissed Nottinghamshire’s best batsman for a duck following Lancashire’s mammoth score.
Hales could only watch his off-stump crumble as Wood’s pace went unanswered.
Meanwhile, Lancashire won the match by 22 runs. After winning the toss and electing to bat, Lancashire scored 208 runs for the loss of four wickets in the stipulated over.
Darryl Mitchell, who scored an unbeaten 85 off 41 balls with four fours and six sixes, laid the foundation for the Lancashire innings. Apart from Mitchell, openers Phil Salt, Luke Wells and captain Liam Livingston contributed to the score. Salt scored 34 runs from 24 balls, Wells scored 38 runs from 23 balls and Livingston scored 32 runs from 23 balls.
Samit Patel took two wickets for Nottinghamshire while Sindon James and Shaheen Shah Afridi took one wicket each.
Colin Munro and others fought for Nottinghamshire, who batted with a target of 209 runs, but it was not enough to win. Munro scored 60 off 29 balls while Matthew Montgomery and Tom Moores were dismissed for 41 each.
In the end, Nottinghamshire managed to score only 185 runs for the loss of five wickets in the allotted over.
Luke Wood took two wickets for Lancashire while Saqib Mahmood and Luke Wells took one each. Lancashire’s batting stalwart Daryl Mitchell is Man of the Match.
Lancashire’s next match is on June 7. The opponents are Worcestershire.
