At least one person has been killed in Russian attacks on the Ukrainian capital Kyiv on the night of Sunday, according to local authorities.

Mayor Vitaly Klitschko writes on Telegram that the air defense systems have been activated, and that several explosions have shaken Kyiv in the early hours of Sunday morning local time.

Work is being done to get an overview of the situation, Klitschko says on Telegram.

– Over 20 Russian drones heading towards Kyiv have already been destroyed by the air defense systems, but a new wave of drones is heading towards the capital, he writes.

Witnesses tell Reuters that there have been several explosions after the flight alert went off in both Kyiv and large parts of Ukraine on the night of Sunday.

– Stay under cover. Don’t take their safety too lightly. This will be a difficult night, Klitschko writes to Kyiv residents on Telegram.

Russia has not yet commented on the attack on the night of Sunday.
