Memorial Day weekend arrives and with it the city’s beaches open to the public for the summer season.
Fourteen miles of sand and sea will be available for New Yorkers to enjoy through September 10.
They include the beaches of Rockaway, Coney Island, and Orchard.
But due to the shortage of lifeguards, this weekend only specific sectors will be enabled.
The city needs a total of 1,400 lifeguards and currently only has 500 for the summer season.
Rescuers are on duty from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Swimming is prohibited when lifeguards are not present.
The public outdoor pools will open to the public on June 29.
On the other hand, we remind you that some sections of Rockaway Beach are closed due to a remodeling project.
The beaches between Beach 116 and Beach 143 streets will remain closed to the public this summer.
This, for works related to a project of 336 million dollars that began in 2020 to reinforce the coast of the peninsula. This area suffered a lot of erosion from storms like Hurricane Sandy in 2012.
City officials say this will save the future of this near-beach community in the long run.
This work is scheduled to continue until 2026.
The boardwalk will remain open during construction.
