Ukraine, Gualtieri: “Rome has opened its doors to those in need”
“Rome is truly the city of hospitality. It has been able to show the best part of itself thanks to the generosity of Roman men and women who have not hesitated to open the doors of their homes to those in need. The response to the tragedy of war in Ukraine unleashed by Russian aggression, through enrollment in the register of welcoming families in Rome, was moving”. The mayor of Rome Roberto Gualtieri writes it on Facebook. “It is equally nice that this experience has widened, because there are so many people seeking refuge from hunger or oppression who need to be helped – he adds – One year after the start of this project of widespread reception, it was nice to meet all in the Campidoglio to share results, experiences, stories that touch the heart. Rome has thus been able to exploit that great capital which is active citizenship, which must be increasingly involved. In fact, we hope to relaunch this experience and make it an international example as well. I want to sincerely thank all these families, the associations, the volunteers, Refugees Welcome Italia, Unicef Italia, Unhcr Italia – Onu Agency for Refugees, the councilor Barbara Funari and the Department of Social Policies, the delegate to the Metropolitan City Tiziana Biolghini, the president In Converti and all those who have done their utmost to offer shelter and concrete help to the refugees. All of us, today, are a richer community, a larger family that has grown up not looking away, but having had the courage to welcome, not to raise walls, making Rome even more an open, inclusive, welcoming city”.
