Adam Symington of Python Maps has created an amazing map that reveals the planet’s highway network and shows the world’s roads by continent.
According to the map, the length of the road network in the world is about 21 million km, of which 14 percent is in the United States alone.
This road network covers major highways and rural roads, according to the map, which was published on the “Visual Capitalist” website.
To create the map, Symington used the Global Road Inventory project, which includes data from governments, research institutes, NGOs, and crowdsourcing initiatives.
According to the British Daily Mail, the roads have been classified into one of 4 categories and have been color-coded accordingly.
Major roads (multi-lane highways) appear in white on the map, while minor roads (pavement highways with high traffic) appear in yellow.
Meanwhile, tertiary roads (residential roads on or off-road) and local roads are marked in red on the map.
“This classification allowed an examination of the relationships between road infrastructure, development, wealth and population distribution,” the Visual Capitalist website explained.
The data reveals that of the 21 million km of roads worldwide, 3 million km are in the United States, which is about twice that of China’s road network, which has a length of 1.7 million km, and 3 times that of India, which has a length of roads of about one million. kilometer.
At the other end of the scale, the small Pacific island of Palau has the smallest road network, at just 18 kilometers.

“However, many countries have smaller grids, and Norfolk Island is the smallest in the dataset at only 10km in length,” Visual Capitalist added.
However, when breaking down road networks by type, China topped the list of major roads, followed by the United States and Mexico.
According to the map, there are large areas in Africa and Australia that have no color at all thanks to large areas without roads, such as deserts.
