The sale was announced Wednesday. Crimean State Council officials, appointed by the Kremlin and Russian President Vladimir Putin after Moscow annexed the peninsula in 2014, voted to nationalize and sell Zelensky’s apartment.
The Prime Minister of the new government of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, Sergei Aksyonov, announced the sale of the apartment together with the decision to nationalize almost 60 other properties belonging to Ukrainian public officials.
“Russia’s enemies will not make money in Russian Crimea,” Aksyonov said.
Zelensky and his wife Olena Zelensky bought a luxury apartment in 2013. Due to renovations and the illegal annexation in 2014, the two have never been able to live there.
Russian media estimate that the apartment is worth around $800,000.
