Sergio Perez expects the Monaco GP’s Monte Carlo circuit to be a more challenging venue this weekend for Red Bull Racing, which has dominated this season, and he and team-mate Max Verstappen will struggle. Show off their strengths.
This year the Red Bull team is impressive in terms of its excellent stability and speed in high-speed corners, but the tight winding of the Monte Carlo circuit makes it difficult for RB19 to play its strengths. Many therefore believe that the Monaco GP will be their rivals’ best chance to end their five-game winning streak at the start of the season.
And Perez also admitted that his Red Bull team will struggle more than usual this weekend, he said: “Of course we know that this is not our strongest field, and we also know that we will struggle a little bit to show our strengths. “
“I thought about Saturday, you’re really going to need to warm up your tires, that’s definitely the key here. Let’s just say it’s not our strongest venue, but we’ll see, it’s the Monaco Grand Prix, Anything can happen.”
“Of course, I think Fernando also has two Ferrari drivers and I do expect them to be strong, like they did at Baku, while the two Mercedes drivers could also join the fray.”
While Perez and team-mate Verstappen have won all races so far this season, Azerbaijan GP Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc interrupted their streak of pole positions this year.
Verstappen believes that Red Bull’s relatively weak single-lap performance may have a greater impact on this weekend’s race. After all, at the Monte Carlo circuit, overtaking is almost impossible.
“I think we’re going to have a tougher race in this race, it’s going to be tighter, but we still have a good car, we just have to use it to its full potential,” said the current world champion.
“We know that lap speed is usually not our strongest point, but we still achieved quite a few pole positions this year, so everything is still possible. But yes, for sure, there will always be surprises here in Monaco .”
Verstappen also said that the reason why they were so pessimistic about their performance in Monaco was due to the special layout of the Monte Carlo circuit, which requires different characteristics of the car in the mostly low-speed corners. He would be more than happy to sacrifice one of the 22 race weekends he races throughout the year if it means his RB19 is a better all-around car at other, more conventional venues.
Verstappen said: “It’s not just about the car, it’s also about the layout of the track. The corners here are so tight and the speeds are so slow, so sometimes you need the car to show a completely different character than you would on a regular track, and you’re driving. It’s also done differently.”
“Sometimes your car works perfectly in these conditions and other times it might not be ideal. While I prefer to have a fast car on most circuits, it’s not ideal for Monaco, but that’s okay. It’s just one game in the season, we just want a good result. Of course I want to win, but if I can’t win, just take points.”
