The PSOE will hold primaries in October in a maximum of 13 municipalities, since in most cases there is only one candidate in the candidacies of the municipal elections of 2023Although it remains to be seen what will happen in those places that asked to delay the process for two months, such as the capital Madrid.
The election of the PSOE candidates for the regional and municipal elections May 2023 has just finished its first stage with the presentation of the pre-candidacies, on September 19 and 20.
Specifically, of the 95 municipalities that were called to choose a candidate in this first round, a total of 82 already have one, since a single candidacy has been presented in those places, so the militancy will not have to choose between several names.
However, the PSOE will hold primary elections on October 9 in thirteen municipalities in which several candidacies have been registered, as long as the applicants have a sufficient number of endorsements to participate in this process.
These thirteen municipalities are Gijón and Oviedo (Asturias); Icod de los Vinos (Santa Cruz de Tenerife); Almoradi and Muxamel (Alicante); Lliria (Valencia); Collado Villalba, Colmenar Viejo and Las Rozas (Madrid); Cartagena (Murcia); San Sebastian (Guipuzcoa); Erandio (Vizcaya) and the autonomous city of Melilla.
Despite this, it is possible that there will be more primaries, since the PSOE gave the option of delaying the process for two months compared to the general schedule, so that the presentation of candidacies goes from September 19 and 20 to September 21 and 22. November, and the first round vote from October 9 to December 11.
Among the places that requested this delay, the cases of the capital Madrid stand out, whose candidate remains unknown, and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, where the name of the Minister of Health, Carolina Darias, as the head of the list, is strongly resounding.
The name of the head of the list for the Madrid City Council remains a mystery that will take time to be resolved, since in this case both the Madrid federation and Ferraz agreed to delay the calendar of primaries, an option that other municipalities have accepted. and the autonomous community of Cantabria.
“Everything that our colleague Juan Lobato is doing is correct, very correct. He is in a time of listening, analysis, reflection on which are the best candidacies for the entire Community of Madrid, also for the capital of Spain”, said the Secretary of Municipal Policy asked about this issue at a press conference in Ferraz.
In addition, he added that the Madrid socialist federation will be the one that “determines the steps” and has not revealed anything about who the candidate for the Madrid City Council may be, nor has he wanted to confirm that he already has a name, as Lobato revealed.
“I don’t know, and even if I did, I would tell him that I don’t know,” he declared.
Gómez de Celis has stressed that they are going “for all” because “Madrid deserves to have a good mayor or a good mayoress”, and he has been convinced that his colleagues from the Madrid federation “will hit the right candidate” for the capital.
The main objective of the PSOE in the next municipal elections are the big cities. In fact, socialist sources indicate that they see it as “possible” to manage to govern in Madrid and Barcelona, although they show some doubts about Valencia, while in the case of Seville they aspire to keep the Mayor’s Office.
