Jakarta –
Asia is the continent with the largest area, as well as the continent with the most dense population in the world. The area of this continent reaches 30% of the total land area in the world with a population of more than 4.6 billion people.
Even so, each country certainly has a different economic level. There are a number of countries that are considered to have a good economy, there are also a number of other countries that are considered poor.
According to the World Population Review, there are several indicators in measuring the economic level of a country, one of which uses the amount of per capita income, otherwise known as per capita Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
GDP per capita is the total GDP of a country divided by the total population of that country. In this way, the level of GDP per capita is considered quite accurate in looking at the quality of the population’s welfare from an economic perspective.
So which countries in Asia have the lowest GDP per capita? The following is a list of the poorest countries in Asia.
1. Afghanistan
Afghanistan is the poorest country in Asia with a GDP per capita of US$ 508 or around IDR 7.62 million. This can happen because Afghanistan is experiencing armed conflict, government corruption, and productive income inequality.
2. North Korea
North Korea is one of the most closed countries in the world. Hence it is quite difficult to really know the economic conditions in that country.
But for now North Korea is estimated to have a per capita income of US$ 642 or around Rp. 9.36 million. Poverty that occurs in this country is influenced by bad governance and there is almost no free market there.
3. Wealth
Yemen has a per capita income of US$ 824 or around Rp. 12.36 million. Poverty that hit the country is largely due to civil war, corruption, and the inability to manage the economy. It is recorded that around 79% of the population lives below the poverty line and 65% is classified as very poor.
4. Tajikistan
Tajikistan has a GDP per capita of US$ 859 or around IDR 12.88 million. Tajikistan’s poverty stems from a lack of infrastructure that hampers the country’s economy and a civil war that destroyed a number of schools in the country.
5. Syria
Syria is one of the other countries that are poor because of the many armed conflicts, just like the countries above (except North Korea). In addition, Syria has experienced very high inflation rates in recent years. Finally, Syria is estimated to have a per capita income of US$ 870 or around Rp. 13.05 million.
6. Nepal
Nepal has a per capita income of US$ 1,155 or around Rp. 17.32 million. Poverty in Nepal is caused by political instability, rampant corruption, lack of industry, and dependence on agriculture.
7. Kyrgyzstan
Kyrgyzstan has a per capita income of US$ 1,173 or around Rp. 17.59 million. About 32% of Kyrgyzstan’s population live below poverty. The causes of this country’s poverty are dependence on agriculture, lack of education, and having few natural resources.
8. Pakistan
Pakistan’s GDP per capita was recorded at US$ 1,193 or equivalent to Rp. 17.89 million. Even though Pakistan is a country that has quite a lot of resources, 40% of its population is classified as very poor. This happens because there is a lot of corruption and elitism against the government, religious and secular conflicts, and a lack of democracy.
9. Timor Leste
After being separated from Indonesia in 2002, this country is considered to be still in the development stage. Timor Leste has a per capita income of US$ 1,381 or around Rp. 20.71 million.
10. Myanmar
About 26% of Myanmar’s population is estimated to live in poverty. The main factors causing slow economic growth are poor government planning, internal unrest, lack of foreign investment, large trade deficits, and inadequate infrastructure and lack of knowledge to exploit the country’s natural resources.
As a result, this country’s per capita income is only US$ 1,400 or Rp. 21 million, making it one of the 10 poorest countries in Asia.
