Latvian cyclist Toms Skujins finished 39th in the 18th stage of the multi-day Giro d’Italia race on Thursday.
On Thursday, the cyclists measured 161 kilometers, overcoming five categorized climbs. The leading group of seven riders had accumulated more than five minutes of lead over the peloton with 45 kilometers to the finish, but as the finish approached, the followers managed to reduce the lead to four and a half minutes.
In two climbs of the second category, at the end of the stage, the cyclists separated, the victory was celebrated by the rider of the “Jayco AlUla” team from Italy, Filippo Dzan. In the fight for the victory, the Italian overtook the Frenchman Thibaut Pinot of “Groupama – FDJ”, who finished with the same result as the winner – four hours 25 minutes and 12 seconds. Pino’s compatriot Varen Bargil (“Arkea Samsic”) won the third place, 50 seconds behind. Skujiņš (“Trek-Segafredo”) finished in 39th place and was the fastest of his team’s drivers. He lost 11 minutes and 15 seconds to the stage winner.
Geraint Thomas from Great Britain (“Ineos Grenadiers”) retained the first place in the overall standings, who is 29 seconds ahead of Slovenian Primož Roglič (“Jumbo-Visma”) and 39 seconds ahead of Portuguese Juan Almeida (UAE). Skujiņš loses 53 minutes and 42 seconds to Tomas, taking 31st place. The Latvian is in fifth place in the ranking of sprinters and has fallen to ninth place in the ranking of the “King of the Mountains”.
This year, the tour is scheduled for 21 stages, with the bike ride ending on May 28 in Rome. Jay Hindley won the Giro d’Italia last year, becoming the first Australian cyclist to win the prestigious overall race.
The greatest achievement for Latvian drivers is Pyotra Ugrjumov’s second and third place in the overall standings in 1993 and 1995, respectively. Roman Vainšteins won the stage in 1999, while Andris Naudužs, who was third in one of the stages in 2004, also got on the podium.
