The lower house of the British Parliament – the House of Commons – on Thursday unanimously decided to recognize the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as a genocide of the Ukrainian people.
It is reported by “European truth“.
Conservative Party MP Pauline Letham, who introduced the relevant resolution in the House of Commons, stressed that the famine in Ukraine in the early 1930s was artificial, caused by the forced harvesting of Ukrainian peasants.
She also drew parallels with current events, when Russia is stealing Ukrainian grain from the occupied Ukrainian territories.
“That is why we must reassure the Ukrainian authorities and the international legal order that the UK – at least the British Parliament – will not ignore war crimes and crimes against humanity,” Letham said.
Other deputies who supported the decision called the need to recognize the Holodomor as genocide as a manifestation of solidarity with the Ukrainian people and a signal that the famine should not be used as a means of waging war.
In general, the Holodomor has already been recognized by the parliaments of almost three dozen countries of the world, including in Europe, as a genocide of the Ukrainian people.
During the spring, such a step was resorted to Belgian House of Representativeslower house of the Belgian Parliament, Icelandic Parliament and upper house of the french parliamentand Slovenian parliament.
